….HISTORY of the Greenback  history gb – started in 1981

The Event was kicked off by a group of amateur fishermen and women at the old Cabarita Beach Hotel in the mid-1980s and has been running for 30+ years now. There were a couple of years that the event did not get a look in. Pat & June O’Keefe, the Greenback Patrons were the people behind the first 20 odd years, as was, of course, the legendary Gary “Arab” Temperly. It was Arab’s fireworks that launched the fishermen, women and kids to start fishing along the gutters and estuaries from Tweed to Ballina. Then, of course, we cannot forget the men in the Pottsville Fishing Club Tent. That’s Richo and his merry men, who do a fantastic job checking weighing and sorting fish into the winning categories.

The Cabarita Beach & Pottsville Lions Club took over the running of the Event and showcased the Event in 2006 under Lion’s Stan Dawson OAM. Since that time the Lions Club has thrown itself into staging this annual Event, which benefits rescue organisations like the Cabarita Beach Surf Club and the Tweed Rescue Association (VRA) and local primary schools along the Tweed Coast. The Lions Club of Cabarita Beach & Pottsville Beach has proudly raised over $120,000 for our above beneficiaries.

We are now back-to-back following the success of 2018 Tweed Coast Marine Greenback Fishing competition with the 2019 Pottsville Beach Sports Greenback Fishing Competition A project of the Lions Club Cabarita Beach & Pottsville Beach.
