9 – 10 June (NSW Long-weekend);  Pandanus Pde, Cabarita Beach NSW.

Yes, we are back. After another year out of action, the Competition is back for its 31st year with a major sponsor ($9000 boat package), revised boundaries and other minor changes that will open the competition to new entrants.

In 2015 and 2017, the Lions Club of Cabarita Beach Pottsville Beach had to make the difficult decision to postpone and cancel both events. With some success, the 30th anniversary of the Greenback fishing competition was held in 2016. Without resources and financial support, the success of the event is heavily dependent on Sponsorship, Raffles, Fish Auction and the sale of 4WD Beach Permits. Entrance Fees alone cannot cover the costs. Volunteers play a large part of the overall success in the running of the event.

Our focus is to continue to support the Greenback Fishing Competition and we can only achieve this with volunteers and our sponsors.  If it wasn’t for Tweed Coast Marine and Mercury offering major sponsorship support the event would have been cancelled. So please support ‘Tweed Coast Marine’ when you’re after a new boat, boating accessories and maintenance/servicing needs.

This competition is all about the Fishing and the Big Prizes on offer this year. There are new prize levels and increases in prize money/goods across the categories with a prize pool of ~ $30,000.

HISTORY of the Greenback  history gb – started in 1981

The Event was kicked off by a group of amateur fishermen and women at the old Cabarita Beach Hotel in the mid-1980s and has been running for 30+ years now. There were a couple of years that the event did not get a look in. Pat & June O’Keefe, the Greenback Patrons were the people behind the first 20 odd years, as was, of course, the legendary Gary “Arab” Temperly. It was Arab’s fireworks that launched the fishermen, women and kids to start fishing along the gutters and estuaries from Tweed to Ballina. Then, of course, we cannot forget the men in the Pottsville Fishing Club Tent. That’s Richo and his merry men, who do a fantastic job checking weighing and sorting fish into the winning categories.

The Cabarita Beach & Pottsville Lions Club took over the running of the Event and showcased the Event in 2006 under Lion’s Stan Dawson OAM. Since that time the Lions Club has thrown itself into staging this annual Event, which benefits rescue organisations like the Cabarita Beach Surf Club and the Tweed Rescue Association (VRA) and local primary schools along the Tweed Coast. The Lions Club of Cabarita Beach & Pottsville Beach has proudly raised over $100,000 for our above beneficiaries.

Weigh-In is Sunday, June 10 9:00am Sharp (with drop-off 7am to 9am).
The Cabarita Beach Surf Life Saving Club will be cooking breakfast for all those weary fishing families. They can sit back while the sponsor acknowledgements and prize presentations are made. After the presentations, we will be running a Fish Auction where those that did not secure their own have the opportunity to buy some fresh fish.
There will be Markets to the west of the Surf Club and live activities for the youngsters. If people wish to enjoy an alcoholic beverage they may do so at the Surf Club or the Cabarita Beach Hotel.  The closing of the event (~1pm) will follow the drawing of the major raffle prizes where 1st prize is the Tweed Coast Marine and Mercury $9000 boat package.

This site will be updated with regular posts leading up to the start of the competition.
